PENAMPANG. It was a 11km run with a difference when more than 300 participants was set off by CLEAR President Winnie Jimis at 6:30 am from Kg Mahandoi Jetty. The route was the usual village roads however as the runners went through the Kodundungan Padi fields along a semi-polluted drain named Parit Juta, the runners were required to throw at least one mudball into the dirty water.
Fastest runner 50 year old Guianus Salagan was the first to arrive 30 minutes later and cheerfully hurled a few balls into the canal.
Later other runners who joined the run more for fun and exercise paused for a few minutes to hurl bags of mudballs while District Officer Luvita Koisun watched and explained that the balls can assist in cleaning up the drain and hopefully protect the nearby river.
Also participating in the run was favourite Kadazan radio DJ Johanna Joseph Lokupi who was in a hurry to finish the race.
Winnie from the environmental NGO CLEAR said people are still puzzled how the mudballs can help clean up the dirty water, hence an exhibition booth will be set up during the coming bamboo raft festival at Kg Terawi Jetty on 24th this month. The public can learn they too can start treating waste water from their homes and help revive the River Moyog.
She informed the mudballs with three types of waste eating bacteria were previously contributed by students of SMK Bahang and St Michael’s, the Village Security Safety Committee JKKK of Nosoob Baru and Kivatu Nature Farm who supplied the effective microbe EM1 concentrate. The same microbes can also be used to speed up the preparation of agricultural compost.
The winners of the run were, Male Veteran: Guianus Salagan. He was previously a famous runner for the Mt Kinabalu international run.
Veteran Women: Kona Liau, Male Open: Muhd Azlan, Women open: Britanny Isabelle
All winners were rewarded with cash prizes and certificates.
