TODAY - 40th day since Penampang Cowboy Departed - Odes to John Henry Liansun

Forty days ago, one of the most colourful character in Penampang and who should call me "uncle" because he married the daughter of my first cousin, departed for good.

I did not write anything about him in this blog out of respect for his children who had requested others NOT to post pics taken during the funeral on 26 Mar 2014 on such sites as Facebook.

However, to remember our friend and relative who has a lifetime fondness of the cowboy way of life including his love for country music, I decided to write this short notes and selected pics which I hope his children would give an exemption.  His cousin Tan Sri Herman Luping has also written a dedication to him in his weekly column in Daily Express.

As I said to many relatives and friends, if only Penampang has a large grazing land areas, no doubt Henry would have acquired a small ranch to keep our own water buffaloes and a few horses to round them up, and definitely I probably would have joined him and learn to ride a horse. Sadly, in Sabah, even the padifields have all gone to become industrial and housing areas.

Nevertheless, tonight will be the 40th day prayer for our departed friend but his memories in pics will forever remain.

A large banner for the late Henry was hung during his funeral on the 26 March 2014.  He is also well known for singing the song "Cold Cold Heart"

A real horse fully saddled was also present for his spirit to have a ride before the final journey to the next world.

Only son Cassianus Jr,  giving an eulogy for his father

And lots of friends and relatives came to pay their last respect in full cowboy attire, including his own childrens and in-laws.
A very fitting final farewell for a man whose love for the cowboy style was consistent throughout his life. I just wonder will he be the last cowboy of Penampang ??
